The brighter the sun outside the window, the more often we begin to think about protective products for the skin. And right! Today we will tell you which decorative cosmetics can protect you from unwanted risks

What are we hiding from?

We never get tired of repeating: UV rays from the sun are harmful to the skin.

Photodermatitis, burns, early wrinkles and pigmentation are just a small list of the consequences that can be encountered if do not use cosmetics with an SPF factor during the sunny season.

Experts warn that the effect of sunlight may not be noticeable at first, but soon the excess of melanin will make itself felt - most often this occurs in the form of the appearance of age spots, which are then so difficult to get rid of. The damaging effect of UV rays accumulates, and not a single sunburn, even in childhood, goes unnoticed.

Just in case, we recall that the bulk of ultraviolet rays are type B rays - because of them, if we are careless, we risk getting sunburn. Type A rays do not burn the skin, but they act much more insidiously: they cause a process called “photoaging” and a host of other troubles. Unlike type B rays, they perfectly penetrate both clouds and window panes. Fortunately, modern manufacturers usually provide protection against both types of rays.

Find your own and calm down

In recent years, protecting yourself from ultraviolet rays, you can combine business with pleasure. Adding SPF factors to beauty products has become a good form. And make-up manufacturers have embraced these rules of solar etiquette.

What are sunscreens? The answer to this question would consist of a lot of obscure terms.

The main thing we need to know is that sunscreens can be physical and chemical (do not be afraid of this word).

Physical forms on the skin like a screen, a protective layer that cannot be overcome by ultraviolet rays. Chemicals are designed in such a way that when they come into contact with the sun's rays, they neutralize their effect, but gradually they themselves are destroyed, for about 2 hours in the sun. That is why the protection must be updated every 2 hours, if we are talking about being outside.

And if we applied foundation or powder with SPF and spent half an hour outside in the morning and then half an hour in the afternoon, the sun protection effect of chemical filters should last until the evening.

SPF 10 vs SPF 50 - what's the difference?

Products with a low degree of protection (SPF 10-15) are recommended for owners of very dark skin. However, for the cold season, when the value of the UV index does not rise above 4, the minimum protection factor suits everyone. You can find out the current level of ultraviolet radiation on your smartphone in the Weather application or on the websites of meteorological services.

Beauty products with SPF 15-30 are a good choice for an urban environment, provided that your skin does not outwardly react to the sun's rays (does not redden, does not peel or break out). Of course, if you are going to sunbathe on the beach, stronger “protectors” are required. You can also move around the city in conditions of UV index from 4 to 6 under the cover of funds with SPF 20.

they are nocturnal.

If you used a cream or serum with retinol or glycolic acid in the evening, you will need either makeup with SPF or daytime moisturizer with SPF the next day.

" Heavy Artillery" with SPF 50 should definitely be in the arsenal of girls with fair skin, as well as those who are going to sunbathe.

Besides, this is the kind of protection that the skin needs after peels and other cosmetic procedures.

By the way, when choosing protective equipment and SPF level, it is convenient to focus on your phototype. Our test will help determine it:

Sunscreen or foundation with SPF?

Experts are almost unanimous on this issue: for urban life with a UV index of no higher than 6 and provided that you are exposed to direct sunlight while moving around the city at intervals of no longer than 5 minutes, decorative cosmetics with SPF- filters.

There is no point in layering funds on top of each other - the tonal foundation with the right protection factor will do the job perfectly.

By the way, here are ideas for summer makeup.

But if you plan to bask in the sun and even get a little tan, opt for specialized sunscreens. An important point: for reliable protection from the sun, for example, on the beach or in the mountains, in sunny places, the application of 2 mg of sunscreen per square centimeter of skin is required. That is, a whole teaspoon of sunscreen or milk on the face and neck.So makeup with SPF is a purely urban option.

Face foundation with SPF

Any self-respecting make-up brand has a foundation with SPF. Let's highlight the successful, in our opinion, players in this category.

Garnier BB cream

In Russia, this product is loved primarily for its light moisturizing coating that adapts to your skin tone, as well as available options for different skin types (and even for problematic, in the Clear Skin line!). Added SPF 15 to the formula as a bonus, so moderate but sufficient sun protection in urban areas is included.

Maybelline NY Dream Urban Cover Foundation

Perfectionists will appreciate Dream Urban Cover foundation. Firstly, it contains a high protection factor SPF 50. Secondly, it gives a fairly dense coating that evens out skin tone. And thirdly, it takes care of the skin thanks to the antioxidants in the composition.

Top Secrets CC Cream SPF 35 by Yves Saint Laurent

As befits a CC cream, it evens out the skin tone (it comes in three shades: pink, peach and lavender - for color correction of various imperfections) and takes care of it quite actively. It contains a whole cocktail of caring oils (apricot kernel, jojoba, coriander, etc.) and vitamin E.

Teint Idôle Cushion Foundation by Lancôme

Is your morning training time strictly regulated? Then the cushion is what you need for a quick make-up.

Teint Idôle made it to our list for several reasons. The first is the patented Polar Cushion Technology, which extends the durability of the effect. The second is a matte finish, which seriously reduces the risk of oily sheen on the face. The third is the SPF 50 factor, which protects against the negative effects of ultraviolet rays and the formation of free radicals associated with it.

By the way, you will learn how to use the cushion correctly from our video:

Prodigy CellGlow Fluid by Helena Rubinstein

Fluid can be attributed to both skin care and decorative cosmetics. On the one hand, it performs many caring functions - for example, it resists age-related changes and the negative influence of the environment. On the other hand, it adds a he althy glow to the skin and can even replace the makeup base. Well, the icing on the cake was a high UV protection factor - SPF 50.

Lip skin is very thin, so sun protection is vital. We know that there is no shortage of protective lip balms in the beauty market, but there are not so many products that give them color in parallel. We found a balm stick with SPF 30 from the American brand Kiehl's. There are three shades in the palette: beige, berry and pink. So you don't have to choose between makeup or protection!

Lipstick with SPF, and extra moisturizing, can be found at Maybelline. And there are plenty to choose from - 24 shades.

How to use cosmetics with SPF?

In order for the protective properties of beauty products to work one hundred percent, it is recommended to follow certain rules.

  1. Apply before sun exposure so that it can absorb and adapt to the skin, otherwise you can burn while you apply it outside.

  2. Be especially careful when distributing foundations and fluids. Since the products are colorless, it is easy to miss some areas on the skin, leaving them unprotected. The main victims of forgetfulness are the décolleté, shoulders and neck.

  3. Renew the protective layer every 2-3 hours if you regularly go out in the sun during the day. The most convenient way to do this is with a tonal cushion.

  4. Don't mix SPF 20 and SPF 30 products in the hope of getting SPF 50. If you plan to layer multiple products, SPF cream should be the last one, and should be applied only after the previous layer has completely absorbed into the skin. If your routine includes two products with SPF at once, for example, a day cream and foundation, then, most likely, only what is on top, that is, tonal (in our example), will really protect from the sun. Dermatologist Maria Nevskaya, expert, explains: “Chemical filters, when applied on top of other products, will not be able to interact with photons of light and neutralize their effect, so it is not recommended to apply anything to products with chemical filters. Other cosmetics can be applied on top of products with physical filters, the protection will remain, because they work like a screen. ”

  5. Instead of a setting spray, or if your favorite makeup doesn't contain SPF, a dry facial sunscreen spray will come in handy. This is an option for long city walks in sunny weather.

  6. Watch out for expiration dates. As a rule, tonal means after opening can be used within a year or two. After this time, you should not expect that the remedy will be just as effective.
